5G technology will bring exciting changes to our lives. Its installation will deliver faster and more capable wireless service and allow for innovations in technology, healthcare, business, and transportation. While many localities and municipalities have embraced 5G technology, some have tried to block or delay its installation through the land use approval process.
On June 9, 2020, the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) adopted new regulations designed to expedite state and local government reviews of modifications to existing wireless communications facilities to expedite the deployment of 5G technology. The FCC rules bar state and local governments from denying 5G providers’ requests to make changes to wireless towers and base stations if the changes do not substantially change their physical dimensions. In fact, the rules mandate that local governments approve these applications within an expedited timeframe. Our informative lunchtime webinar will bring up to date on the latest FCC rules, and our panel will discuss how they will affect local governments and the land use approval process.
Presented in cooperation with NJSBA Local Government Section and Land Use Section.
