Instead of rescheduling its spring show to later this year, the NAB will unveil a new, digital event and expand its New York show later this year. NAB President/CEO Gordon Smith said in a letter to attendees Friday that in the week since the association cancelled its Las Vegas show, much has changed due to the coronavirus.
“The landscape has continued to shift dramatically with major sports leagues, school districts, and other businesses around the country suspending operations,” said Smith. “The governor of Nevada has also made the decision to close all nonessential business operations in the state.”
Under the current circumstances, it would be “impossible” to reschedule NAB2020 this year, according to Smith. Instead, the NAB will proceed with a two-pronged approach.
It’s exploring ways to bring the broadcast industry together online, in both the short and long-term. The trade lobby plans to launch NAB Show Express next month. “This digital experience will provide a conduit for our exhibitors to share product information, announcements and demos, as well as deliver educational content from the original selection of programming slated for the live show in Las Vegas, and create opportunities for the community to interact virtually,” Smith said.
It will expand NAB Show New York with new programs, partners and experiences. The association has had “numerous conversations’ with show partners about expanding their participation and says it’s heard from “numerous” exhibitors interested in enhancing their presence at the fall show. The event is slated for October 21-22, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, NYC.
